United Sound Systems (U.S.A.) / 1950

back next

Design: A militaristic sort of design, with shaded perspective lettering roaring over the spindle hole, the letters becoming wider as they radiate upward, reminiscent of a jet plane passing overhead, while flashes of lightning crackle out from the USS logo. The colour combination of white on red lessens the full impact, though the ink may have weakened over time.

History: Unknown (have info? Please send to info.re.78s@shaw.ca). Label scan courtesy of collector Georg Richter of Germany, who notes: "The records were made by United Sound Sytems, Detroit, Michigan, USA. Apparently John Lee Hooker, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Max Roach were using the USS studio in 1947/48 to record some early songs for third-party labels. The studio may still exist as United Sound Sytems, Inc., but is mentioned as being of private ownership."
