Supraphon (Czechoslovakia) / c. 1950

Design: The twin-tailed lion, prominently featured on Czech heraldry, holds a stylized lyre. The label name lettering is beautifully lettered, with the main strokes thickening at the top as they radiate out from the spindle hole. One of Czechoslovakia's most notable calligraphers and type designers was Oldrich Menhart (1897-1962), whose characteristically sharp-pointed-serif style seems to have influenced this lettering.

History: Thanks to collector Georg Richter of Germany, who notes: "Supraphon was the successor of the Czech Ultraphon (Küchenmeister) subsidiary, later nationalized." Label scans courtesy of collector Dimitar Malchev of Bulgaria.
