Renown (South Africa) / c. 1953

back next

Design: A eye-catching design in bright primary colours (looking rather like a hot South African sun) which does not follow traditional layouts in that the label name follows the outer perimeter, and which probably looked very attractive while spinning on the turntable. The solid patches of colour are typical of 1950s design (see the Karusell design, right), as graphic designers made use of the freedoms offered through the increasingly popular medium of offset litho printing. The use of bold sans serif lowercase lettering is also a departure from traditional norms, the stars at either end of the label name adding extra emphasis.

History: Label scan courtesy of collector Owen Burgess of Canada.
