Mocambo (Brazil) / c. 1952

back next

Design: A roughly-built shanty or mocambo is used as a logo, placed over a music note; the label name lettering, made up of roughly-nailed boards is obviously intended to convey the same rustic quality. Both images are somewhat understated, and might have had more impact with an increase in size.

History: According to Wikipedia, "the mocambos (from mocambo, literally 'huts') were village-sized communities mainly of runaway slaves in colonial Brazil, during the Portuguese rule." Label scan courtesy of collector Jan van Meenen of Belgium.
