Design: The large eight-pointed red star at the centre may draw its significance from its symbolic meaning within Hindu religion and culture, representing the 'eight forms of wealth': money, ability to transport, endless prosperity, victory, patience, health and nourishment, knowledge and family; in broader astrological terms it represents order in the universe.
History: As previous. Dum Dum, as noted on the perimeter, is a manufacturing suburb north of the city of Kolkata (Calcutta), where during the Raj the British had a major military arsenal; it was also where the soft-lead-core expanding bullet known as the 'dum-dum' was developed. Shyamal Mitra (1929-1987), the artist on the label, was one of the best-known Bengali-language singers and composers of his day. Label scan courtesy of collector Jean Theriault of Canada.
