Esengo (Belgian Congo) / c. 1952

back next

Design: The pie-shaped label format is much like the Capitol/Telefunken label; whether any corporate connection existed is unknown. The unequally-letterspaced label name features bold roman lettering with extended spiky serifs, with the cross-bar of the 'E' positioned very low down on the main stroke. The significance of the turtle (tortoise?) is unknown.

History: The word 'Esengo' means 'joy' in Congolese (the main language of the country being French), so this may be a Christian-oriented label. Label scan courtesy of musicologist and collector Bill Dean-Myatt of the U.K.
