Eagle (Japan) / c. 1951

Design: The image is still based on its Nipponophone beginnings, though the eagle is a little less carefully defined, but the banner carrying the label name, with its convex baseline, is quite attractive. The upbeat rockabilly tune above, 'Rockabilly Fencing' by popular recording artist Hibari Misora (1937-1989) (play here) is apparently about some of the sword-fencing skills practised in kendo, a Japanese form of martial art which originated with the Samurai warrior class of the feudal era (thanks to Sayaka for help with the translation).

History: Nipponophone had its beginnings in 1910 as the manufacturer of the first Japanese-made phonograph. In 1925, the company became affiliated with Columbia, which was eventually absorbed by EMI.
