Duke (U.S.A.) / 1955

Design: A strange conglomeration of shapes in the upper segment, reminiscent of the exaggerated fins and tail-lights of a 1950s American car.

History: The song featured here was a posthumous hit for rhythm 'n' blues singer Johnny Ace (b. 1929), who inadvertently shot himself in the head with a .22 calibre pistol during a backstage performance break in Houston, Texas in late 1954. He had had several major hits on the Duke label, which had been launched in Houston in 1952, and which survived until 1973.
