Discus Phonograph Records (U.S.A. ethnic) / c. 1956

Design: The image of a naked Greek 'discobolus' about to launch his weapon is probably based on a faulty marble copy of the original bronze sculpture by Myron, in which the head faces forward instead of back. The dynamic image is heightened by the dramatic perspective lettering for the label name; the projectile's trajectory is also echoed in the curvature of the (somewhat antiquated and superfluous) descriptive 'Phonograph Records.' Being shown in reverse, the figure appears in negative form; the original drawing appears more clearly in the reversed detail (right).

History: Label scan courtesy of collector Helmut Janisch of Germany.
