Design: The old barbershop joke, "How many people in your quartet?" here refers to the Southern Gospel style, not the number of people involved. The Blackwoods, here overlapped by the five lines of a music staff overlaid by a Bible cartouche, were a big influence on Elvis Presley. Recordings such as this would likely have been sold at live performance venues.

History: Formed in 1934, the Blackwoods were appearing on an Iowa radio station in 1940. In 1950 they moved to Memphis and began appearing on TV. Descendants of the group's original members continue the singing tradition today.
