Alouette

Alouette (Canada) / c. 1955

Design: The label name is taken from the French childrens' folk-song Alouette, Gentille Alouette which became widely popular after WWI, eventually to be adopted almost as a 'national anthem' by French-Canadians (Montreal's professional football team is known as the Alouettes). The bird pictured here is the horned skylark, native to North America, which differs from its European counterpart in size and markings. The label name, professionally lettered in a loose monoline brush script, accommodates the illustration well, its forward-and-upward angle nicely balancing the backward-and-upward angle of the bird.

History: Unknown (have info? Please send to info.re.78s@shaw.ca). Evidently a Quebecois independent label.
