Ultraphon Dvorsky (Czechoslovakia) / c. 1942

Design: The Ultraphon 'U' is used to unusually bold and dramatic effect here, with the typography following the letter's contour. Both the illustration and the label name lettering have a strong 'woodcut' feel, with clean, angular lines.

History: Label scan courtesy of collector Gabriel Gössel of Czechoslovakia, who writes: "This was a personal label of Mr. R. A. Dvorsky, leader of the best Czech dance band between 1929 and 1944. A singer, music publisher and composer, he was one of the main shareholders of Czech Ultraphon. After 1948 he tried to leave Czechoslovakia for the West, but without any success; in fact, he was sentenced to imprisonment for a few years by the communists."
