The Aristocrat

The Aristocrat of Records (U.S.A.) / 1947

back next

Design: A design that attempts to achieve an austerely tasteful look, incorporating a blobby-looking crown as a mark of the aristocratic class (though it would more accurately suggest royalty). In the label name typography, the generous letterspacing suggests individuality, while the high cap height, contrasting with the low x-height, suggests class distinction (by contrast, a large x-height and low cap height would suggest democracy, and tight letterspacing the jostling of the common crowd).

History: Label scan courtesy of collector John Anderson of the U.S.A., who notes that this Chicago-based label, which was bought out by the Chess brothers, ran from 1947 to 1950.
