Regal 1

Regal (Canada) / c. 1948

Design: A complete departure from traditional elements (still to be seen in the design on the next page), but the austere lettering of the label name and the simple cut-out crown still convey an aura of dignity.

History: Capitol Records was founded in Los Angeles in 1942 by singer/songwriter Johnny Mercer, Capitol Canada being launched in 1947 with Ken Kerr (a former Sparton Records sales manager) running Capitol's Canadian operations. Shortly after, Government restrictions on foreign investments forced that company's closure, so in 1948 Kerr and two other associates founded Regal Records (meanwhile, Capitol Canada's records were being pressed by Musicana). In June 1949 Regal began pressing Capitol's Canadian releases.
