Design: The label name is lettered in a 'smoky' sort of style, as smoke issuing from the magic lamp. Like many other post-war labels, silver is used rather than the traditional gold (especially in conjunction with red), perhaps because it suggested chrome plating, which had big visual appeal on cars of the period.

History: Founded in 1946 as a rhythm 'n' blues label, Philo evolved into the Aladdin label. The reason for the choice of the name 'Philo' is unclear, unless it was in honour of the Greek philosopher of the same name.
