Num Sing

Num Sing (China) / c. 1949

Design: The lion is held in high regard in Chinese culture, symbolizing resistance to evil. Here, it appears with a lyre, a cross-cultural symbol of music. In the band across the middle is a very detailed music staff with notes and lyrics, the meaning of which (to me) is unknown. The stylized type of lettering in the upper segment seems quite different from that in the lower area, which has more of a brush-scripted quality.

History: Unknown (have info? Please send to info.re.78s@shaw.ca).
