Joint Broadcasting Committee

The Joint Broadcasting Committee (U.K.) / c. 1947

back next

Design: Evidently produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation (compare design elements and treatment with the BBC label of the early 1950s), with the iconic 'Big Ben' clock tower of the Houses of Parliament flanked by a pair of heraldic lions. The high-definition illustration was perhaps created by the scraperboard technique, where a thin layer of black ink, overprinted on a white China clay base, is scraped away with sharp tools.

History: Evidently produced in conjunction with a Polish ethnic audience in mind (many Poles emigrated to England immediately prior to WWII, mainly being civilian refugees or remnants of the defeated Polish armed forces who wished to serve with the Allies). The wording at the foot translates as: 'Polish/English Record Company.' Label scan courtesy of collector and musicologist Bill Dean-Myatt of the U.K.
