Excelsius

Excelsius (Italy) / c. 1940

back next

Design: The label name, which is lettered in a bold ultra-condensed roman font, follows a very unusual concave arc (the meaning of 'Excelsius' is 'higher,' which would seem to suggest a convex format), and is surmounted by the Italian imperial eagle (as illustrated on the Mussolini label) in a diamond-shaped panel. The outer border and spaces between the panels are liberally decorated with repetitive curlicues and semicircular dots, making this a highly ornamented and attractive design.

History: Label scan courtesy of collector Luca Barzaghi of Italy.
