Apollo (U.S.A.) / c. 1948

Design: At first glance the illustration, which appears in reverse because it is printed in a light colour on a dark background, looks like a female with heavily-applied eye-shadow and wearing an evening dress, but is actually Apollo, the toga-clad Greek god of sunlight, poetry, music and poetry.

History: Launched in 1944 and lasting into the late 1950s, Apollo scored some major hits in the doo-wop genre. Scans below (left) courtesy of collector Ken Hagelthorn of the U.S.A; (right) collector Georg Richter of Germany.
