Ultraphon 7

Ultraphon (Czechoslovakia) / 1938

back next

Design: A rare label in that unlike most pictorial images on 78 rpm labels (of which there are precious few), the photograph captures a significant moment in time, much like that accompanying a news item appearing in a magazine or newspaper. However, the crucial date being celebrated, 28 October 1938, is somewhat inaccurate (see below).

History: Ultraphon, a German company, was owned by Küchenmeister of Holland. Label scan courtesy of collector Gabriel Gössel of Czechoslovakia, who writes: "The record contains a speech by president Beneš to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Czechoslovak republic, but the interesting point here is that Beneš had actually resigned his presidency two weeks before the date of this anniversary. Resigning on October 5, he immediately went into exile in the West."
