Telefunken 1

Telefunken (Germany) / c. 1936

Design: A strikingly dynamic design, with a logo that accentuates the dynamism. The imprinting is beautifully arranged, though letterspaced lowercase is now considered de rigeur.

History: Telefunken was founded in 1903 as a joint venture between two large German companies, Siemens & Halske and Allegemeine Elektrizitats-Gesellschaft. However, the record label of the same name was not launched until 1932 when Telefunken decided to take over the record technology and matrices from the bankrupt Küchenmeister conglomerate (thanks to collector Georg Richter for updated info). Label scan above courtesy of Bulgarian collector Dimitar Malchev; all scans below courtesy of collector Georg Richter of Germany, who notes that the black and gold colour variation was "reserved for serious music only" (the music here deals with a story found in Greek mythology). The border around the pie-shaped segment is slightly different from the others, and the label name is set in classical Roman capitals rather than the standard chunky bold sans serif.
