Design: A very amateurish piece of lettering for the label name, but some care has been given to make sure of readability in reversing the black strokes to white when crossing the photograph. The entire upper segment is a half-tone image, being printed by the letterpress process (note the coarse dot structure and unevenness of the background in the photograph). Lithography, a process which was better suited to the reproduction of photographs, was not widespread in England at this time.
History: Label scan courtesy of musicologist and collector Bill Dean-Myatt of the U.K., who notes that this "ultra-rare" recording was made by Decca. Soermus (known as "The Red Violinist"), a celebrated musician of Estonian origin, was born in St. Petersburg in 1880. This may be a unique example of a record being marketed from what appears to be a private address.
