Royale (U.S.A.) / 1939

Design: The arrow passing through the lettering would have been appropriate for the Robin Hood label, linking the letters in more distinctive way than the usual underline. The vertically-emphasized Gothic pen lettering is well handled, but the lines of shading on the crown have fused together, appearing as single bold lines.

History: Launched in 1939 by maverick record producer Eli Oberstein, who had been instrumental (so to speak) in launching the Bluebird label (and would go on to form several others, including Hit, Varsity and Kick), Royale lasted until 1940. At this time, Oberstein's corporate umbrella was the United States Record Corporation, which intentionally bore close resemblance to RCA. Label scan courtesy of Harvey Golden of the U.S.A.
