Phonolita

Phonolita (Belgium) / c. 1935

Design: The blocky lettering for the label name is typical of the 1930s, with Art Deco influence. The heart-shaped panel containing the label name is intruded by an area for the royalty stamp, which forces the imprinted material into awkward spaces at each side. Note the 'wrong font' (non-matching) exclamation mark after the song title, which appears in an equivalent of Bodoni Ultra Bold, a style which became widely popular for advertising purposes in the 1940s.

History: Unknown (have info? Please send to info.re.78s@shaw.ca). Label scan courtesy of collector Jan Van Meenen of Belgium.
