Lambda (U.K.) / c. 1938

back next

Design: The 'lambda' is a letter in the Greek alphabet, and looks like an inverted lowercase 'y.' It corresponds to the Roman L, and is shown as a logo at the top of the label. Why the letter 'lambda' should have been chosen for the label name is unknown; perhaps, like the libra 'pound L' sign used by the Lindström company (right), it had some connection with the company name. As with other labels, gold print on a red background makes for poor contrast and is barely legible.

History: Unknown. Label scan courtesy of musicologist and collector Bill Dean-Myatt of the U.K.
