Kristal (The Netherlands) / c. 1936

Design: Evidently a German-made product, but here, for the Dutch market, the Kristall name is spelled with one L. Printing a light colour on a dark background has altered the dark-shadow effect of the label name lettering, making it appear in negative form (see true effect in the reversal below). The 'bank note' engraved look is consistent with the swelled-line swash which fills the top part of the upper segment. Though a variety of disparate ornamental styles are combined, usually a recipe for disaster, it remains an attractive and well-designed label.

History: Label scan courtesy of collector Klaas Vonk of The Netherlands.
