Eurocord Gipsyphon

Euro-Cord Gipsyphon (France) / c. 1938

Design: A gypsy violinist entertains a couple seated in a restaurant or night club. The nomadic gypsy tribe (the name 'gypsy' deriving from their dark complexions and tendency to wear outlandish clothes, leading to label them as 'Egyptians,' later contracted to 'gypsies'), though calumnated for their shiftless ways, were renowned for their skills on the violin. Gipsy violinist Django Reinhardt became a jazz legend in the 1930s as the leader of the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, and this label probably parlays on his popularity.

History: The label apparently specialized in gypsy music with a Hungarian flavour. Label scan courtesy of collector Bill Dean-Myatt of the U.K.
