Eldorado (France) / 1930

Design: A classic example of the Art Deco style, featuring a hard-edged, angular treatment which was a reaction against the fluid, organic lines of the preceding Art Nouveau style. Both fashion styles originated in France, and would spread a consciousness of design (especially as it related to advertising) worldwide. A major graphic image of Art Deco was the rising sun, which symbolized the golden dawning of a brave new world. Likewise, the name 'El Dorado' was the name of promise of a mythical city entirely built of gold, the futile search for which was to obsess medieval Spanish conquistadors.
