Benny Goodman

Benny Goodman (U.S.A.) / 1936

Design: A very attractive symmetrical design, with 'modern' lettering for the label name. Unusually, the imprinting is done in the same colour as the pre-printed shell, typical of Goodman's insistence on attention to detail, though the spelling of the song title is not quite kosher.

History: Benny Goodman, a clarinetist who came from humble Jewish roots in the slums of Chicago, shot to worldwide fame in the late 1930s to become acknowledged as the "King of Swing," swing being a highly influential style of big-band jazz. Label scan courtesy of collector Georg Richter of Germany, who notes that though this record was released in 1936, the actual recording session dates from 1933.
