Bayreuth 1

Bayreuth (Germany) / 1936

Design: The image shows the Festspielhaus in the German city of Bayreuth, a city famous for its annual opera festival presenting performances of the works of the late 19th century composer Richard Wagner. The Fraktur-style lettering contributes to the Gothic mysticism inherent in Wagner's work. The 'seal' at the foot dates the issue of the recording.

History: Manufactured by Telefunken, a company originally founded in 1903 as a joint venture between two large German companies, Siemens & Halske and Allegemeine Elektrizitats-Gesellschaft. However, the record label of the same name was not launched until 1932 when Telefunken decided to take over the record technology and matrices from the bankrupt Küchenmeister conglomerate.
