Aérophone (France) / c. 1935

Design: A superb example of the Art Deco style, which had its beginnings with the International Exposition of Modern Industrial and Decorative Art in 1925. The sunrise image was frequently used as a symbol of the dawning of a new age. The severity of the high-contrast lettering is relieved with a nervously-drawn vertical line. The thick-and-thin border, also evidence of contrast, is likewise typical of the era. Note how the lettering is optically adjusted so that it widens as it radiates outward from the spindle-hole.

History: Unknown (have info? Please send to info.re.78s@shaw.ca). Label scan courtesy of collector Graham Farnell of the U.K.
