Oriole 1

Oriole (U.S.A.) / 1926

back next

Design: A playful, blobby-serifed lettering with a left-leaning bias is used for the word 'Oriole.' Somewhat surprisingly, yellow was not used as a background colour (the plumage of the male Baltimore oriole, as illustrated here, is predominantly a brilliant yellow, with a black 'hood' and black markings to the wings and tail).

History: Launched in the early 1920s as a 25-cent record for the McCrory store chain, Oriole lasted until 1938. Alternate colour label scan (below) courtesy of collector Georg Richter of Germany.
