Maraton 1

Maraton Rekord (Czechoslovakia) / c. 1921

Design: Encircled at the top is the helmeted head of a Greek warrior, in profile, wearing a crested helmet with a nose-guard (a mix of Greek and Roman imagery). Bordering each side is a silhouetted laurel branch, symbolizing victory. The label name is contained in panels which lead toward and away from the spindle hole, a most unusual (unique?) arrangement. In the lower segment of this brightly-coloured and attractive label is a complex four-lobed logo containing a symmetrical arrangement of three plant-leaves, with a curvilinear letter 'M' superimposed at the centre.

History: Label scan courtesy of collector Gabriel Gössel of Czechoslovakia, who writes: "The Maraton label was issued by wholesalers Antonín & Arnost Fucik Co. of Prague, who obtained their matrices from Homokord."
