Imperial 3

Imperial (U.K.) / c. 1926

Design: In this single-colour reproduction, the crown and cope (a regal cloak of purple, lined with ermine, a white fur with black markings, exclusive to royalty) which appear on the earlier American label (right, from the early 1900s) are re-interpreted with different graphic elements: Jacobean strapwork appears behind the crown, and Baroque inline bracketing in the lower segment. The three-dimensional shadowing of the earlier record has been reduced down to one. The obsolete word 'Record' has been dropped and the label name lettering is simplified to bold Roman capitals, devoid of decoration, and the baseline curve of the label name has a much shallower arc.

History: The Crystallate company launched this label in 1920. Label scan courtesy of musicologist and collector Bill Dean-Myatt of the U.K.
