Grand Pree Record

Grand Pree Record (Australia) / c. 1925

back next

Design: An attractive but somewhat old-fashioned layout, with the label name, including the obsolete word 'Record,' following the outer curve, and framing the famous Australian black swan (although it appears here in a mid-blue). The lower segment consists of ornate floral bracketing, which looks as though it was originally designed to contain a third colour.

History: The spelling of the label name 'Grand Pree' may be a sloppy rendering of the French expression 'Grand Prix' (Major Prize). According to the web site of collector Adam Miller of New Zealand, the Grand Pree label first appeared as a paste-over on Winner records, was then pressed by Actuelle, and was finally pressed in Australia by Clifford Industries. Label scan courtesy of collector Graham Farnell of the U.K.
