Duophone (U.K.) / c. 1925

back next

Design: A tightly-drawn, well-arranged design, showing the marks of a professional art studio. The label name overlaps a panel containing a fine technical drawing of the unique Duophone tone-arm and reproducer. Carefully-drawn floral ornamentation each side of the strong main panel is a throwback to the Victorian love of profuse organic ornament. The fussy frames and borders at the foot leave only a small area for the imprinting, forcing the type sizes to be on the small side.

History: Launched in late 1925, the Duophone label survived until early 1930. It was marketed in combination with the Duophone phonograph, which featured a twin sound reproducer for increased volume. Label scan courtesy of collector Graham Farnell of the U.K.
