Beltona de Luxe 2

Beltona de Luxe (U.K.) / c. 1927

Design: In this attractive variant, the ornamentation (reminiscent of Victorian flock wallpaper) now encloses an oddly-shaped imprinting panel in the lower segment, in which the type sizes are very small because of the restricted space available. The Beltona girl, printed in a continuous-tone screen, has a ghostly quality in contrast with the solid line work of the rest of the design.

History: Founded in 1922, Beltona was taken over in 1927 by Edison Bell. Label scan courtesy of collector and musicologist Bill Dean-Myatt of the U.K., an expert on Scottish music history, whose comprehensive book, A Scottish Vernacular Discography 1888-1960 is available at www.clpgs.org.uk.
