Sol 1

Vike's Special/Sol (Norway) / c. 1919

back next

Design: A charming arrangement of variously-shaped elements, with a beautiful Victorian-era scroll banner containing panoramic historiated (pseudo-medieval) lettering and a spiky-tongued rising sun (whence the name 'Sol'). At the foot is a tiny panel filled with wiry curlicued ornament, another Victorian-era touch.

History: Label scan courtesy of collector Kjell Thorsen of Norway, who writes: "Vike's Special 'Sol' (Sun) was the very first independent record company in Norway; the official company name was Vike & Co., Oslo. The founder/owner was Bjarne Vike, a businessman who ran his own talent agency and record company, which survived into the 1930s, when it eventually faded out. However, Vike remained active in business until his death in March 1970 at the age of 81."
