Phoenix (U.K.) / 1913

back next

Design: A well-laid-out label, featuring a well-drawn illustration of the eagle-like phoenix of ancient mythology, long ostrich-plumes on the side of its head, rising anew from the ashes. Symbolically, the phoenix represented rebirth after death. Note the seldom-used OE dipthong in use in both the title lettering and in the panel at the bottom, and the careful staggering of the copyright notice around the phoenix's wings.

History: A low-cost Columbia product for the British market which lasted from 1913 to 1915.
