Design: The word 'excelsior' derives from Latin roots (ex, beyond, and celsus, 'above all'), symbolized by the wood-engraved image of a lion endowed with the wings of an eagle (right) which could spot its prey from on high and then destroy it. The encircled profile on the right may represent Nicholas II, the last Tsar (Caesar) or Emperor of All Russia, who ruled from 1894 to his abdication in 1917, and who was executed with his family by Bolshevik revolutionaries in 1918.

History: Label scan courtesy of musicologist and collector Bill Dean-Myatt of the U.K.
