Columbia Record 5

Columbia Record (U.K.) / c. 1917

Design: An unusual use of mechanical screens, being probably printed by the lithographic process at a time when many labels were being printed by letterpress. The 'magic notes' show very narrow upper bars.

History: The musical 'Chu Chin Chow' was first performed in London in 1916, so the record would likely date from shortly thereafter. 'Zig Zag,' the revue mentioned on the credits, was performed in London in 1917. Label scans courtesy of collectors Graham Farnell of the U.K. and Klaas Vonk of The Netherlands.
