Arena-Record (Austro-Hungarian Empire) / c. 1913

Design: The red and gold colouring and the illustration of the arena effectively conjure up the spectacle of a bullfight. Also, the braided border is reminiscent of a matador's decorative epaulettes.

History: The Arena-Record company, part of the Carl Lindström recording empire, was based in Verona, Italy. Label scan courtesy of collector Gabriel Gössel of Czechoslovakia, who writes: "Arena-Record obtained its masters from Polyphon-Musikwerke AG. The 8000 series was designated for operettas and popular music. Some other Czech dealers (e.g. Elite, Janus, Fox, Derby and Omega) also used these same matrices and pressed them under their own label names."
