Design: An example of 'artistic printing,' a movement in the graphic arts in the late 19th century which featured complex ornamentation; its beginnings were in the struggle between the limitations of traditional letterpress printing and the technical freedom offered through the emergent process of lithography, as the two processes strove to outdo one another in visual appeal.

History: Evidently a partial paste-over label over a German-made record, for the firm of Ogden Smith, which, according to internet sources, specialized in fishing tackle for sporting gentlemen (below) during the early 20th century.
