International Concert Rekord

International Concert-Rekord (Poland) / c. 1906

Design: A primitive yet charming letterpress ('hot-metal') setup, in which the compositor has made an attempt to approximate a circular format by the use of a border or frame composed of large rounded-corner border units. He has also tried to lend interest to each line by using some very interesting hot-metal fonts of different styles, including sans serif ('International'), pseudo-calligraphic script ('Concert-Rekord'), followed by an ultra-condensed slab serif ('Rozkosz Polka'). Modern commercial design is here seen in its infancy, as the craftsman is very aware of balance and visual appeal, over and above the basic mandate of presenting raw information.

History: Label scan courtesy of collector Lucyna Lachowicz of Poland.
