His Master's Voice 3

His Master's Voice (India) / c. 1908

Design: The Victorian Gothic-era ornament is the same as appearing on the Gramola Record label, and shows an attractive miniature of the 'scribing cherub' at the foot.

History: Label scan courtesy of collector Georg Richter of Germany, who writes: "Perhaps the miniature 'scribing angel' on this P-series issue was shown to indicate an early recording. This track, by Indian artist Lal Chand Bural ("amateur!") was recorded between 1904 and 1905 by engineer William Sickler Darby, and re-released in 1916 with another track by the same artist on the other side of the record, but with a completely different label design [see previous page]."
