GT&S Melba Record 1

Gramophone "Melba" Record (U.K.) / 1904

back next

Design: Typographically undistinguished, but featuring two distinct families of fonts which were both products of the Victorian era: stub-serif (for the label name etc.) and Latin, with its spiky serifs, used for the song title (note the curly lowercase r).

History: The release date is very helpfully provided here; this was during the period when the Gramophone Company's name was defined as the 'Gramophone and Typewriter Ltd. and Sister Companies' (GT&S), 1900-1907. Australian singer Nellie Melba (1861-1931) was an operatic superstar. Her name on the title and her signature provided buyers with a guarantee of the quality of the product.
