Disque Ideal

Disque Idéal (France) / c. 1906

Design: The family likeness to the Disque Aspir design is obvious, with the military band of the French Republican Guard performing on both records; the same carefully-treated typographic treatment can be seen on the (parent?) Pathé 'label.' Prior to WWI, the strict drum-beat and brass horns of military marches comprised a significant proportion of European recordings; following the war called 'Great,' this genre vanished almost entirely, giving way to the syncopated rhythms and stringed instruments that characterized jazz. Why this recording should belong in the 'Art Series' category is unknown.

History: Unknown (have info? Send to info.re.78s@shaw.ca). Label scan courtesy of collector Lucyna Lachowicz of Poland.
